AbstractHydrogels offer new opportunities for human-machine interactions, owing to their inherent similarities to human tissues (e.g. high water content, superior compliance, and biocompatibility). Particularly, the recent development of tough hydrogels enables wide applications in devices and machines, including wearable electronics, stretchable optical fibers, ingestible devices, and soft robotics. However, one central challenge is how to transform these hydrogel devices and machines from laboratory researches to practical usages? The main limitation in existing hydrogel devices is their short-term functionality due to the failures of hydrogels as structural and functional materials. For example, the existing tough hydrogels still suffer from fatigue fracture, and the recently reported hydrogel actuatorsfail tobe used in practical robots that require robust and consistent performances under cyclic loads. This talk will be focused on designing hydrogel materials and structures for long-lasting biomedical applications by understanding the fundamental mechanics, physics, and chemistry in hydrogels.
SpeakerShaoting Linis a graduate researcher in the department of mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned his BS degree from Tsinghua University in 2010 and MS degree from Tsinghua University in 2013, both in automotive engineering. He is currently completing his PhD working with Prof. Xuanhe Zhao in Soft Active Materials Lab at MIT. His current research focuses on exploiting fundamentals in hydrogels and transforming hydrogel innovations into hydrogel-based electronics, devices, and machines.
