On May 29, 2018, academician Wang Quan of the Department of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering of SUSTech was appointed as chair professor of ZJU. Professor Qu Shaoxing, associate dean of SAA, presented the appointment letter. After the appointment ceremony, Wang Quan gave an academic report lecture to teachers and students presented.
Wang Quan is an outstanding alumnus of Zhejiang University. He graduated from the department of mechanics of ZJU in 1988, and then studied in Peking University from 1988 to 1994, and obtained his master's degree and doctor's degree. After graduating, he has taught at the National University of Singapore, the University of Central Florida, the University of Manitoba in Canada and the City University of Hong Kong. Currently he is the chair professor of SUSTech. He was elected as academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Canadian Academy of Sciences in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and is also a fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. His main research areas include the theory and application of structural health monitoring and maintenance, nanotechnology and energy collection, etc. He has obtained a series of original research achievements and enjoyed important international academic influence.
After the ceremony, Wang Quan presented a wonderful academic report.His report, titled "A New Way of Collecting Ocean Energy Using Intelligent Materials," focuses on how piezoelectric materials can be used to capture energy from waves. After the report, everyone asked and consulted academician Wang Quan, and the discussion was warm and fruitful.
