Professor Nhan Phan-Thien Appointed as Qiushi Distinguished Professor of Zhejiang Univeristy

On 30 October, 2018, Professor Nhan Phan-Thien was appointed as Qiushi Distinguished Professor of Zhejiang University. The appointment ceremony was held in meeting room of Institute of Fluid Engineering. Teachers and students from School of Aeronautics and Astronautics attended this ceremony.

Professor Yu Zhaosheng introduced academic experience and achievements of Prof. Phan-Thien. Prof. Lin Jianzhong expressed sincere welcome and appreciation to Prof. Phan-Thien for joining Zhejiang University, and presented the appointment letter.

Professor Phan-Thien said that he was honored to be appointed as Qiushi Chair Professor of Zhejiang University. He hopes in the future, they can learn from each other, and strengthen cooperation in scientific research and teaching.

After the ceremony of appointment, Prof. Phan-Thien gave a speech on “Sediment disturbance and sediment dispersion from technical activities on seafloor”. He explained recent research work and progress, had a heated discussion with teachers and students present, and patiently answered relevant questions.

Prof. Phan-Thien is the dean of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, academician of the Australian Academy of Sciences, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, academician of the Asean Academy of Engineering, deputy editor of top journals in the field of fluid mechanics Physics of Fluids. He once won the Australian Centenary Medal and Gordon Bell Award. Prof. Phan-Thien is a world renowned expert of rheology, the founder of the classic Phan-Thien-Tanner viscoelastic fluid constitutive model.

He has long been associated with SAA. He is the doctoral supervisor of Prof. Yu Zhaosheng, postdoctoral supervisor of associate professors Shi Xing and Pan Dingyi, and co-supervisor of retired professors Fan Xijun and Fan Yurun during their early visit to the University of Sydney.
