On 7th and 8th Nov., the second JFM symposium: From Fundamentals to Applied Fluid Mechanics in Hangzhou was successfully held in Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University. This symposium was co-organized by Cambridge University Press, Editorial Board members of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics and Zhejiang University. Editors of Cambridge University Press, Associate Editor-in-Chief of JFM and Professor of Johns Hopkins University Prof. Charles Meneveau, editorial board member of JFM and Professor of the University of Twente Prof. Detlef Lhose, Prof. Colm Caulfield from Cambridge University, Prof. Ke-Qing Xia from Southern University of Science and Technology attended this opening ceremony. More than 150 professors and scholars from leading universities around China participated this symposium. They were from Zhejiang University, Beijing University, University of Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Tianjing University, Shanghai University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology and so on.
Prof. Shao Xueming, executive vice dean of SAA made welcome speech to all scholars and introduced profound reputation of JFM in China. He expressed gratitude to JFM to choose Hangzhou as one of the co-organizers of the symposia. Kathleen Too from Cambridge University appreciated Zhejiang University for its considerate arrangement, and introduced developing history of JFM. She pointed out that the number of papers published by Chinese scholars in JFM has soared in recent years. She believed more and more Chinese scholars will have opportunities to share their cutting-edge research results in JFM.
Editorial board member Charles Meneveau, Detlef Lhose, Ke-Qing Xia, as well as invited experts Prof. Ding Hang from University of Science and Technology of China, Prof. Liu Ye from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Prof. Zhou Quan from Shanghai University, Prof. Li Cunbiao from Beijing University and Prof. Yu Zhaosheng from Zhejiang University made speeches and shared their research findings in the symposium. The symposium also had Poster Presentations showing research results by young scholars.
This is the first official symposia held by JFM in China. Several JFM editors gathered together, providing a great opportunity for Chinese scholars to communicate with world’s top fluid mechanics scientists face to face. This symposia will surely inspire young scholars to continuously devote the research field of fluid mechanics.
