On June 11, on behalf of Zhejiang University, 6 graduate students from the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics participated in the Boeing Student Engagement Campus Exposition 2019 held by Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services (hereinafter referred to as BSAS). Peking University, South China University of Technology and the University of Nottingham in Ningbo also attended the event.
At the opening ceremony, President Dermot Swan of BSAS warmly welcomed the students. Mr. Swan introduced the company to students with humor and explained his views on career development. He highlighted Boeing's Golden Rules in working, which is to be honest and disciplined. You have to respect your work to get respect from others. He encouraged students to join the aviation industry, which is full of passion and broad market prospects. After the opening ceremony, Boeing officials led students to visit aircraft maintenance and modification workshop. The company attaches great importance to this activity. Workers in factory introduced aircraft painting and cargo transformation projects being carried out in the site. Students and teachers were even invited to visit the cockpit of plane.
In the afternoon, BSAS organized a seminar themed Career Development and Gender Equality. Before the seminar, each university made thematic report respectively, which increased understanding between participating universities. Leaders and representatives from different departments of The Boeing Company shared their ideas and experience in the seminar. Erna K. Prardede, director of production support at Boeing Tianjin, shared her story of job-hopping from Amazon to Boeing. She said she appreciated the multicultural atmosphere of Boeing and was optimistic about the future of the aviation industry. Boeing pilot Chen shared the story of how he successfully obtained a pilot's license in less than two years. His own story encouraged students to pursue dreams with persistence. Students discussed career plans and their opinions on gender equality with leaders from Boeing Company. ZJU student Li Chunjiang thought that this event promoted the understanding and friendship between different universities. He believed that the relaxed and pleasant working atmosphere of Boeing Company helped to stimulate employee's potential ability. Meanwhile, the supporting training service and smooth career promotion channel provided a broad stage for employees' career development. In addition, he was deeply impressed by the humorous and easy-going leaders, as well as their open-minded and multi-cultural attitude.
BSAS is a joint venture among Boeing, the Shanghai Airport Authority and China Eastern Airlines with The Boeing Company owning majority interest. Since its inception in 2006, BSAS has benefited from the expertise and resources of The Boeing Company and its partners. Boeing Shanghai provides a comprehensive range of services from engineering, aircraft maintenance and modification to component repair and overhaul and supply chain management. It leverages Boeing's best practices, including Boeing quality standards, information technologies and applications for efficient, cost effective operations. The Boeing Company has set up student scholarship in Zhejiang University in 2019 to strengthen cooperation with Zhejiang University, and to promote student mobility to related enterprises and research institutes. This event provides an opportunity for students to visit aircraft factory and talk with leaders from Boeing Company face-to-face. It not only helps students to improve their understanding of large aviation enterprises, but also let them know the management and working atmosphere of large foreign companies.
