INTRODUCTION
The institute has 3 secondary disciplines, i.e. Solid Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics and General and Fundamental Mechanics. The Solid Mechanics is the national key discipline and Engineering Mechanics is Zhejiang provincial key discipline. The institute has constructed: the State Engineering Courses Research Center of Mechanics, the State Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Mechanics, and also the Key Laboratory of Soft Machines and Smart Devices of Zhejiang Province. Main research areas are nonlinear stohastic dynamics and control, multiscale X-Mechanics, mechanics of smart materials and structures, mechanics of soft matter, Biomechanics, Mechanics Issures in Major Projects, etc.

Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamics and Control
Nonlinear stochastic dynamics is a discipline to study the complex behavior of nonlinear systems under various stochastic perturbations which are commonly observed in nature and society, including narrow band noise, wide band noise, bounded noise, etc. The main task is to study the stochastic response, stochastic stability, stochastic bifurcation, reliability of the systems, and to investigate the nonlinear stochastic optimal control strategies for minimizing the response, maximizing the reliability, or minimizing the first-passage failure. The Institute of Applied Mechanics at Zhejiang University has long been recognized as an important force in the study of stochastic dynamics and control, mostly due to its world-renowned research team lead by Prof. Weiqiu Zhu, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Zhu conceived and conducted the work on “the theory of stochastic excited dissipated Hamiltonian systems” which was awarded the second prize of national natural science award.
